BaylorWISE Spotlight: Dr. Regina Hiraoka

What inspired you to pursue a career in STEM?

As an undergraduate, I had a research mentor who taught me a lot about the importance of using the scientific method to evaluate the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic treatment. Prior to this time, I was unaware that many commonly offered psychotherapies have no scientific basis and/or haven’t been shown to demonstrate long-term effectiveness. My mentor helped me recognize my desire to contribute to the evidence-based treatment literature and as well as my interest in learning how to provide these treatments.

How would you describe your work to the public?

My primary role is that of clinical supervisor. Specifically, I train doctoral-level psychology students to provide evidence-based assessments and psychotherapy to those with mental health difficulties.

What do you enjoy doing the most?

I enjoy spending time with my husband, our toddler, and our two Chihuahuas. I also like to knit and have accumulated quite a yarn stash! Share an accomplishment that a younger you would have thought unachievable?

Although knew I wanted to obtain a PhD in clinical psychology, my younger self had MANY doubts about whether it would actually be possible. Not only did I obtain that degree, but I’m now involved in training a new generation of doctoral-level psychology students.

If you can give a piece of advice to the younger generation, what would it be?

I would say that just because you can’t imagine yourself reaching a specific goal or achievement doesn’t mean that it’s not possible!
