Today we have another undergrad for our spotlight and it's Emily Schultz who wants to pursue a PhD in Infectious Disease and Immunology.
What inspired you to pursue a degree in STEM?
Freshman year I took part in the SEA-PHAGES course under the direction of Dr. Adair, and this research-based biology course was what sparked my interest in conducting scientific research. Conducting research on bacteriophages made me realized how much I enjoy the research process and thus started me on the path I am now, toward a PhD in Infectious Disease and Immunology.
How would you describe your work to the public?
I investigate viruses that are transmitted by mosquitos and their impacts indifferent tissue types, such as in brain tissue or in placental tissue. I work to better understand viruses such as Chikungunya and Zika that have the ability to impact neurological function as well as cause congenital syndromes.
What do you enjoy doing the most? (ex: work related or hobby)
When I am not doing lab work, I love to go kayaking and hiking with friends.
Share an accomplishment that younger you would have thought unachievable? Having multiple first author publications in peer reviewed journals as an undergraduate, presenting my research at an international research conference in DC, and being named a 2020 Goldwater Scholar, are accomplishments I never would have dreamed of when I was younger.
If you can give advice to the younger generation, what would it be? Confidence in your own abilities and potential is critical when pursuing your dreams. Surround yourself with people that also believe in you.
